Tulip 2011 - Short news

Tulips
The flower trade of tulips is at a very sharp price level already from the start of the season. Last week a small recovery could be observed because of the increasing demand in connection with Valentine’s Day. Due to the wintery conditions the so called street trading does not sell any flowers. The expectation is a price improvement in the period towards Women’s Day on 8 March. The quality of the tulips can be called good. Because of the early season, more flowers have been brought to the auction than in other years.

The final planting prognosis has not yet been published but last autumn probably less tulips have been planted for bulb production. Varieties such as Yokohama and Monte Carlo show a considerable shrinkage in area. The tulips have been planted under good circumstances, but the period after planting has been very warm and dry, so that some growers had been forced to irrigate their lots to obtain well rooted bulbs. At this moment most of the lots are covered with a layer of snow and Holland is suffering by a strong frost period, so we are not sure how the tulips will get through the winter.

Lilium 2011 - short news

The growers still have about 40 million lilies (Oriental, Asiatic, LA and OT) for which they are not able to find a buyer, because these bulbs are not suitable anymore for long term storage, the assortment no longer fits the demand or the bulbs have been infected with a high percentage of PLAMV virus. This will imply that a large part of the bulbs will be thrown away, because most growers do not want to take the risk to start packing the bulbs.

At this moment the growers are busy with the delivery of the last French grown bulbs and they have already begun preparing the plant material that will be planted again in March. A sifting in the assortment will take place because anyhow the growers will not or partially plant - only low % - PLAMV affected lots and varieties of crop 2011 for which a buyer could only be found with difficulty or not at all, will also only be partially planted.

The nurseries are busy with harvesting and with the delivery of the Asiatic and LA varieties. The circumstances for harvesting are perfect.

The results look good, but there is a bit more harvest damage than last year. This as a result of the fairly warm weather of the past weeks: during harvest the bulbs have a higher temperature and this makes the slightly damaged spots “soil” more than they normally do. The temperature has dropped since early this week and you can see that there is less damage.

After the LA and Asiatic, the OT and Oriental are next. Not everywhere, but in different areas they will start harvesting next week. If the weather remains good (no frost) the breeders will be ready with harvesting and processing at the end of December.

Trade: Because of the world-wide insecurity, the foreign nurseries are very reserved and the flower prices are under pressure. This has also an influence on the flower trade which leads to low flower prices.

Tulip 2012The past weeks the growers have been busy with planting the tulips of crop 2012. At the beginning of October we have had a lot of rain and as a result of the wet weather the growers started planting a bit later this year. Fortunately we have had quite good weather the past weeks and most of the tulips have been planted now. They expect that the sown area will probably be the same as last year.

The sales of crop 2012 are starting slowly and large batches are sold to tulip breeders, mainly in size 10/11 and 11/12 at a sharp price. There is also some trade in relation-lots and varieties which were sold very quickly last year.

At this moment the flower prices of the tulips are sold for a fairly good price at the Dutch auction. This concerns mainly Southern Hemisphere bulbs and ice tulips.

VWS has had a good show at the IFTF last week. Lots of visitors saw the new website and the Mobile App. Because of the well organized Hortiweek more visitors than before made the trip to Holland. The first Mobile Flower bulb App, which VWS has launched, is a great success. The first updates with the newest varieties will be done this week.

The harvest of the irisbulbs is almost starting again. The growing season has been very unsteady. Shortly after planting there was a long period of early frost.

In spring a normal crop appeared, even though it has been very dry during the growing season. Therefore the growers irrigated a lot, a normal harvest is expected.

The French iris bulbs are being harvested and so far it looks like a fairly normal harvest. The trade of irises is a little behind compared to last year.

In the statistics you can see a extension in: LA (167Ha +21%) OT (23Ha +9%) and Asiatic (2Ha + 0,5%)
The Oriental shrinks with -2,3% to 33Ha.

The biggest extension in LA are the varieties: Serrada, Litouwen, Nashville, Indian Summerset, Golden Tycoon, Advantage and Eyeliner. You can find the total statistics below or download the PDF here.

The crops are 2-3 weeks earlier than last year at the same time, the growing circumstances are good. In the beginning after planting the crop has gone through a very warm period, by which its development has been accelerated; later on the climatic circumstances have been more or less normal. The flower heads have been removed and from now on the bulb growth really starts.

The problems with lots with frost damage about which we informed you before, can be better estimated now because the differences between the plants which have continued growing despite of the frost damage at the bottom of the plant and plants that stay behind because the growing point in the top of the plant has been frozen so that the plants permanently stay behind, are much more visible.

The position of the gladioli crop is also 2-3 weeks ahead compared to last year with a slightly shorter and stronger crop. The growing conditions are good, the bulb growth starts from now on.

The growers are very busy harvesting the bulbs. The harvest of this year can be called highly variable. In mostly the older assortment large decreases can be noticed. The growers are busy peeling and delivering the quantities already sold.

At this moment the growers are careful with reselling the bulbs, because first they want to have a clear insight into the quantities they still can offer.

They also expect to be able to make a higher price because the crop results are more disappointing than expected at first. The demand from the export stays behind compared to last year.

The flower prices in Holland vary between moderate and good and the trade is rather quiet. The forcing-companies determine per planting what they need and they do not make a long term plan. Until now the plantings are equal to the number which has been planted in 2010.

Cropnews Lilium 2011

The nurseries have done a lot of pre sale in autumn 2010 and in spring of 2011. The nurseries are a bit reticent because of the frost damage in the east of Holland and the drought of April and May. First they want to see how the crops will come out. Due to the world wide unstable situation, the trade abroad is rather quiet and waiting for developments.

Cropnews Gladiolus and they have been only a little affected by the drought. So far the crop results are normal to good.

Cropnews Tulip 2011
The harvest of the tulips crop 2011 has started again. The growers in Zeeland are already fully busy with harvesting and processing; the harvest results are quite good. The varieties which are a little older and a few early and early-double varieties have been growing much less than last year. The growers who have watered less during the prolonged drought have a considerable lower yield. In other breeding areas they started harvesting Darwin Hybrids and the smaller plant sizes. The harvest results here are also quite normal. However, the skins show some more cracks in them because of the abnormal growth due to the changing weather conditions. Generally will be expected that it will be a fairly normal harvest. At this moment the trade is reticent and also the growers want to see how the harvest will come up.

The Spring Mechanisation exhibition is a nice and big event for flower growers, suppliers, breeders, clients and more. The exhibition will be open for companies and consumers. Production and techniques together at one place, an ideal combination, according to the visitors and suppliers of the past Open Greenhouse Days.

This year the first Spring Mechanisation will be held during the first edition of the Dutch Lily Days. A cooperation made possible by the 15 biggest lily companies from the Netherlands. Five days they will open their greenhouses to show the complete lily assortment of this year.

Lilium crop 2011

75% of the lily bulbs has been planted, the circumstances for planting were and still are very good. Around week 16 everything will be planted. Thanks to the modern machinery of today, the growers are able to plant 3 hectares a day, so on average even the bigger growers can realize planting within 2 or 3 weeks.

Up till now the growers have sold approximately 70% to 90% of the bulbs that they will plant. This certainly means an increase of 25% compared to last year. On average more trade has been done in orientals, OT and longiflorum (80/90%) compared to Asiatic and LA (60/80%). Prices are somewhat higher than presale 2010.
Gladiolus crop 2011

By the end of this month the gladioli bulbs will be planted. Just like the lilies, the circumstances for planting the gladioli are excellent.

Also the sale of gladiolus bulbs is marked by great animation from the side of the buyers; partly due to the disappointing results of last year, prices will be somewhat higher than presale of crop 2010 and buyers are willing to reserve the bulbs that they intend to use.

Tulip crop 2011 - Cultivation France

Up till now the development of the 2011 bulbs is a little earlier (approx. 1 week) compared to the 2 previous years. At the end of this week the growers will start to cut the buds. This week and next week the temperatures will be relatively high in France: 22-27°C at daytime and 7-10°C at night. Normally at this time of the year the day temperature is around 20°C.

The bulb setting takes place after cutting off the buds, so the climatic conditions from week 15 till 21 will be crucial for the bulb growth. Up till today the plants and the circumstances are favourable for a good and early harvest, which will begin at the end of May or early June.

Tulip News: cultivation France

In France it was relatively cold and therefore the harvest will be a little later than last year, but it lays slightly ahead compared to the harvest in Holland, although at some places you can already see small tips emerging from the soil, of particularly the forced varieties.

From now on, they expect a night temperature of around 0 degrees and the day temperature can climb up to 15°C.

Tulip statistic news

The spring statistics of tulips show a reduction in area of 2% which partly is due to the shrunken area of Yokohama of which 81 hectares fewer were planted. Also much less bulbs of Monte Carlo have been planted showing a decrease of 31 ha. Strong Gold however, has been grown with 57 ha to 477 ha. In the red cultivars, Ile de France shows a small reduction of 20 ha. The level of Ben van Zanten is about the same as last year and the number of hectares of Leen van der Mark has diminished with 12. Dow Jones grows with 4 ha to 52 ha and Jan Seignette with 28 ha to 80 ha.

Tulip crop news

From the beginning of the season the tulip flower prices are good. Even after Valentine’s Day the prices remain stable, just like the quality of the flowers and only few problems can be noticed in the forcing market. Because of the good prices, the tulip forcers are already in the market to buy harvest 2011. The bulb growers are little reluctant to sell and make some more money for their bulbs.

Narcissus

In the narcissu s the total area has remained the same.

The area Tete a Tete has grown with 50 hectares while the area of other varieties, both of small and large sizes, has been reduced.

Hyacinth

The area of hyacinths has been strongly reduced because two years ago less hyacinths had been used for propagation. The varieties showing the biggest decline are Carnegie, Pink Pearl and Splendid Cornelia.

The area of the other varieties and annuals is equal to the years before.

Irises

The area of irises has been reduced by 2% just like the tulips, the variety that shows the biggest decline is Blue Diamond of which only 2,70 hectare has been planted.

The number of Apollo has been reduced as well, while Blue Magic after years of shrinkage has grown with 5 ha to 92 ha. Hommes Blue has grown as well, with 1,5 ha.

Gladiolus from VWS at Holland Flowers Fest. 2011

Are you ready for spring? The Holland Flowers Fest. held form 23th till 27th February, offered you the chance to get in de mood.The largest indoor bulb garden in the Netherlands attracted more than 25,000 visitors.

This 78th edition of the HFF was entirely dedicated to MEXICO. A paradise on earth where the sun always seems to shine.

VWS sent in some gladiolus to make complete the colorful gardens. In the competition VWS won a first prize of the gladiolus contributors for good quality and presentation.

So now we launch a brand new concept called "Dutch Lily Days" A whole week in which you can visit the biggest lily companies of The Netherlands.

A new aspect of this year is the opening to public instead of only to growers and breeders. With a strong campaign everyone will be informed about the new "Dutch Lily Days". During the "Dutch Lily Days" 450 till 500 different lily varieties which have been planted in the trial greenhouse, can be seen. The different varieties have been split up in 50% new and 50% existing varieties. Trials from more than 2100 lots have been planted in order to form a good picture of as many as different growers and varieties possible.

Lilium - Crop 2010

The growers are still busy harvesting the last bulbs. The circumstances are very difficult. After the beginning of the thaw and resuming harvest, we have had a lot of rain so that the growers are not able to work on every piece of land because of the damp soil.

Given the circumstances the quality still remains reasonable. Mostly it concerns planting material that is still in the soil (proportion available/planting material = 1:2). The trade continues unabated at higher prices compared to pre-purchasing. Since the beginning of January the flower prices are good.

Lilium Crop 2011

Steps have been made in the most popular varieties at a somewhat higher price than pre-purchasing of lilium crop 2010.

Gladioli Crop 2010

Due to the less results in all cultivation areas the prices have risen and a large assortment is already not available anymore.

Tulip - Latest cropnews

The tulip growers have been able to plant under reasonable circumstances. Just before the beginning of the early winter the tulips had been planted.

The flower prices in the Dutch auctions are good. During the first weeks of January less tulips were brought due to the late harvest time, but now that supply is much more, prices remain stable as well. In the bulb trade mainly relation lots and special varieties are being sold. The Dutch forcing companies have also bought quite a lot of bulbs. In our trial greenhouse the first tulips are already in bloom, as you can see on the picture.

The Mechanisation Exhibit was held the first week of January and VWS was rewarded for the best stand as newcommer at this event. We would like to thank all our visitors at our stand during the exhibition. VWS made a good start in 2011 !

Nieuwe koelruimte bij VWS Import – Export of Flowerbulbs B.V.

Eind november vond bij VWS de oplevering van de nieuwe koel-, vries- en preparatieruimte plaats. Door het strakke bouwschema is de bouw in slechts drie maanden gerealiseerd. Met de nieuwe ruimte van circa 6.000 m3 – met koelcapaciteit voor 50.000 kisten leliebollen – kan VWS nog beter voldoen aan de grote vraag uit de markt van geprogrammeerde bloembollen.

Bovendien is de interne logistiek veel efficiënter geworden, o.a. door de nieuwe aanleverroute naar de achterzijde van het bedrijfspand. De ruimte beschikt over een eigen losdeur. De warmte die vrijkomt van de koelmachines in het nieuwe complex wordt gebruikt voor de verwarming van de kassen.

Lilium crop 2010

At this moment the growers are not able to harvest because of the frozen ground. A top layer of 5 till 8 cm is frozen. Some growers have covered their land with straw, preventing the frost from entering the soil. These parts of land can be harvested when it is not freezing during the day. In week 47 the growers had been fully busy harvesting the bulbs because of the expected frost. These bulbs have been processed and the growers are now forced to cease their activities, because they cannot go on harvesting.

We estimate that approximately 30% of the Oriental and OT bulbs is still in the soil.

This does not need to be a problem when it stops freezing - let’s say - at the end of this week, so that the growers can proceed harvesting next week, but the meteorological service does not predict thaw at short notice, so we will have to wait!

The harvest of Oriental and OT bulbs, as well as LA and Asiatic types, keeps on falling short; especially large deficits of size 18/20 + 20/22 and incidentally of size 16/18 can be noticed.

The successful trade fair of suppliers in our branch, held at VWS since 2008, of course will be part of the Dutch Lily Days.

Open Greenhouse day will be "Dutch Lily Days"

The top 15 of lily companies in the Netherlands are organizing one big event: the Dutch Lily Days. From 24 until 28 May 2011 these 15 major companies will open their greenhouse, a perfect chance to see the new and existing lily varieties in bloom at all different companies in one week time!

The lily parade at the Keukenhof that will be held from 12 till 20 May 2011 is a good opportunity to see the lilies flowering as well, but the Dutch Lily Days will absolutely be a great occasion to see much more. The successful trade fair of suppliers in our branch, held at VWS since 2008, of course will be part of the Dutch Lily Days.

New storage cel at VWS is ready !

The new storage cel at VWS is ready!

We have already started to fill the 1.000 m2 of cooling space with lily bulbs. Approximately 45.000 crates will be stored in the new “supercooler”.

Vijftien van de belangrijkste leliebedrijven in Nederland hebben gezamenlijk besloten om in 2011 een lelieweek te organiseren. Alle lelieveredelaars en de lelie-exportbedrijven met een testkas openen in dezelfde week de deuren. Tijdens deze zogenaamde ‘Dutch Lily Days’ zullen alle lelies in de testkassen in bloei staan.

VWS Export - Import of Flowerbulbs BV is een van de deelnemers aan de lelieweek. Het nieuwe initiatief zal plaatsvinden van 24 tot en met 28 mei 2011. Meer informatie staat op www.lilydays.com Deze site zal in de komende weken uitgebreid worden met alle details.

Gladiolus cropnews

The harvest is in full swing now and the growers are busy with delivering. The corms are of good quality, but just like the lily bulbs the crop results are less per hectare than other years because of the bad growing season.

There is relatively much less in offer than last year, also caused by the shrinkage in hectares and as said above, by the less crop results.

Latest crop news Lilium '09 / '10

The stocks are as good as sold out. There is still demand in the market, especially the European market (Italy).

Lilium2010

The harvest is well under way and the Asiatic and LA lily bulbs are being lifted and processed. The Longiflorum bulbs have already been delivered by the growers. Harvest and crop expectations are like we mentioned earlier: shortages in the larger sizes and structurally less (10 to 15% less) bulbs available in all product types: Asiatic, LA, Oriental, Longiflorum, OT. Harvest activities will be somewhat delayed by the continuing wet weather.

The crop has matured faster by the weather circumstances in the recent months and harvesting can continue unabated. The quality of the lifted bulbs looks good. The bulbs have matured well so that they are better suitable for long storage. Mid or end November we expect to receive the first Oriental bulbs.

At this moment the International Floriculture Trade Fair is being held at Vijfhuizen. If you are still able to visit this fair, we recommend to do so, becouse it is a really interesting show with a lot of participants from the horticultural branch.

VWS wins first prize at the House of Quality

Almost 1000 varieties of several bulbs and plants were presented in the House of Quality during the Horti Fair 2010. Breeders with whom we are doing business with and from whom we also deliver bulbs to you, were also present like every year and were rewarded as well.

VWS has sent in 5 lily varieties and we were rewarded with the first prize in the category grower. See the photos below.

We herewith would like to draw your attention ont the pre-treatments Chrysal BVB and – Chrysal BVB Plus to your flowers. By adding these products, you and your customers can be assured of a longer vase life and better quality of your lily, iris and tulip flowers, compared to the use of only clean water. By clicking the links above you can find the information sheets and timetable of this products.

The best way to see the difference is to experience it by yourself. In cooperation with Chrysal we received samples of their lily food. You can bunch this lily food together with your flowers, so that your customers can add it when putting the flowers into water. If you want to receive some of these samples please contact us so that we can arrange this.

LILIUM 2009

At the moment there is little offer in the market.

LILIUM 2010

In Holland different growing circumstances can be seen :

South Holland:
In general less rain, so that less problems occur and better healthy crop results can be expected.

East Holland:
In this part of Holland relatively much more rain has fallen, in some cases even double the quantity than in southern Holland, so that you can notice more botrytis. In some cases even water damage to the bulbs can be noticed, but so far only incidentally.

Central Holland (Northeast Polder):
As for the amount of water (rain) in this area the situation is somewhere between the two other ones.

GENERAL

We expect that the crops of good condition will give good harvest results, provided that the weather remains favourable to growth until mid October (approximately 70% totally). The crops in which botrytis can be found will die off two weeks too early and show less growth (approx. 30% totally).

FRANCE

At the moment the growers are busy harvesting the longiflorum lily bulbs, mainly White Heaven. The results look good and the bulbs are still dormant. The circumstances in France have been less extreme than in Holland, so that the condition of other varieties, especially Oriental ones, are better than in Holland. A normal till good harvest can be expected.

Extra cold storing and preparation rooms

On August 26th Mrs Riet Sijm laid the foundation stone for the extension of the company with about 6,500 m3 cold storing and preparation rooms.

By means of this expansion we will be able to better meet the demand and requirements of our customers and send the bulbs to our customers much quicker. The internal logistics will be greatly improved by the new capacity.

Lilium Statistics 2009-2010

In total we see an increase of 6%. We did not expected this and thougth that the surface would be similar or an increase of max 3%. However the increase in the new varieties was expected as well as the decrease of the older varieties.

We did not expect that the part of the older varieties which have decreased, remained the same or even has increased as we expected small decrease or similar surface. For example the following varieties; Casa Blanca, Ceb Dazzle, Ercolano, Courier, Fangio, Golden Tycoon, Legend, Marco Polo, Medusa, Mothers Choice, Rialto, Royal Trinity, Samur, Stargazer, Val di Sole and Vermeer.

The surfaces of the not mentioned varieties are as expected.

Lilium crop 2009

In the trade there is little offer left anymore. In the last few months the prices have risen.

The flower-prices in Holland have collapsed in the past 2 weeks, because of the hot summer weather and holidays in Europe. This is a normal phenomenon for this period. Therefore the production is always on a low level in this period.

Lilium crop 2010

Also in the trade for crop 2010 there is little offer in the popular varieties and either the growers are sold out on paper or they wait with offering their remains because now they are fully occupied with other cultivations ( for example tulips) with harvesting and processing or they want to wait the growing of the bulbs.

Until now the stand of the vegetation looks okay. Because of the warm, sunny weather the vegetation is a bit shorter.

The growers relatively had to irrigate more because of the warm dry weather but this has passed without any problems.

Lilium crop 2011

Because crop 2010 is running fast and there is still a lot of demand, the trade has also made a start with buying from crop 2011. The prices are a bit higher than the presale of crop 2010.

Visit Chile June/July 2010

The last few weeks we have visited Chile where the bulk of the “CH” lilium bulbs already
are harvested. The circumstances are very different in the three areas where the
breeders have their fields.

Northern area                  65% harvested                 1 breeder

Good growth, good quality. Better results than before, last year was a good

year but now the quality is even better. Sprout development is good.

Middle area                       55% harvested                 2 breeders

The spring was cold, wet and dark this year. The growing season is two weeks longer
than last year, because of the frost which was late this year. April and the first two
weeks of May were warm. In the end that was very helpful for the growth. This
results in a normal harvest. The quantity of the bulbs is good, but mostly in the
smaller sizes. The breeders in the middle area of Chile are breeding LA, OR and OT
and are harvesting slowly right now, because it is still a bit moist over there.

Southern area                  65% harvested                 1 breeder

Also in this area the growth and quality are good. Just like in the northern area, the results are here even better than last year. The southern area of Chile is very wet at this moment. Sprout development is also good here.

Lilium crop 2009

The stocks are running out and prices are rising. Most of the customers abroad have not yet bought a full program so far, but because of the better flower prices they intend to complete their programs now. Lily crop 2010 from Chile is sold out, so for planting from September/October there will not be many bulbs from Chile available. At this moment the growers in the southern hemisphere are harvesting and up till now harvest seems to be normal.

Lilium crop 2010

Because of the relative cold weather in the past period, the crops are a little behind in development. However the growing season lasts until September/October, so there is every opportunity for growth to catch up the delay. The growers have already sold many bulbs and are further awaiting the growth before continuing sales. Prices are rising and mostly there is no more offer of the better forcing assortment at this moment.

Lilium crop 2011

Selling bulbs of the better forcing assortment has already begun, at higher prices as sales of 2010.

Tulips 2010

The emergence of the tulips was late because of the long winter. In April the crop developed reasonable quickly. The month May was rather cold, so that the tulips have been blooming quite long before they could be topped. This delay however, has given the growers enough time to select their lots well on viruses. Especially the late varieties have been topped significantly later. As a consequence the bulb growth has started later as well. The weather conditions are fine currently: not too hot and sunny and often a rain shower.

Also the tulips in France have been delayed by the cold weather. The crops have been reasonably well on the field and harvest seems to be normal. The bulbs cannot be lifted yet because they are riping slowly. The growers expect to harvest the bulbs in the second week of June.

Trade in bulbs is difficult at the moment. Because of the somewhat less state of the crop and the delay in growth, the growers expect a lower harvest. They are therefore reluctant to sell and hope to get a higher selling price for their bulbs.

Service and Quality

Lets make this year a successful year. Full of service and good products on a growing and healthy market. VWS is active in more than 60 countries and for almost 40 year !

Different cultures and circumstances asks for the best possible approach. Therefore VWS travels all over the world to gather information and see for themselves which differrent approaches are necesarry per location. Besides that VWS is testing more times in a year all the main products in our own test greenhouse.

These tests are necessary to improve and keep the best quality. If there are suppliers with bulbs, which are not suitable for the local circumstances, VWS will not deliver from that particular supplier.

Latest Tulip News

In the weeks before Christmas significantly more tulips have been sold through the auction in Holland. This larger supply in combination with the wintery weather in Europe caused an average tulip flower price far below the cost price. The price-making process in the period between Christmas and New Year was slightly better. As soon as the supermarkets start to sell the tulip flowers it is expected that prices will stabilize.

In our trial greenhouse more and more lots start to flower. The earliest plantings have already been in bloom and have shown a good result. All results from the trial plantings will be added to cultivar properties on our website.

One of our customers in Vietnam send us some pictures from our Tulip bulbs, which are shown during the Hanoi Flower Festival 2009.

Latest Lilium News

The nursery has been quiet between Christmas and New Year because most of the employees from f.e. Poland and Portugal spent the holidays at home. Nevertheless bulbs have been lifted at some places. The percentage of deliverable lily bulbs which are still in the soil amounts to 2 till 4%. The quality of these bulbs remains good.

Some growers have covered the soil with straw, but most of the fields are covered with a layer of snow which prevents the frost from getting deeper in the soil. The growers are now waiting for the thaw period to be able to dig up the bulbs.

Trade will resume this week, because the growers start again processing and delivering the bulbs they have still in stock.

Prices remain stable in the recent weeks and the demand for the better forcing assortment remains relatively high. Some trade has already been done in lily bulbs of crop 2010.

Latest Gladiol News

The gladioli corms have been lifted and the nursery is busy delivering the last corms.

Harvest is of good quality.

There is no clear picture in terms of supply, since not all the “club varieties” have been delivered yet.

Transport Control

VWS Export - Import of Flowerbulbs continuously follows the exact process of containers, to check and improve the process and to avoid problems.
Here they program the temperature, air-ventilation and drains of the container in the harbour according to our instructions.Also the PTI label with date is checked.The truck driver of the container checks in the harbour if the empty container is clean and not older than 5 years. For insurance reasons the container must not be older than 5 years.

All three containers are ok. VWS prefers to transport 3 x 20ft container or one 20 ft + 1 40 ft container. This will cause less pollution to the environment.The container is placed on the truck with a small forklift.Some more containers to go. Here they are standing on power to check if the containers are okay.

Before loading we check the label, the temperature, air-ventilation and drains according to our instructions.

7,2°C is the temperature in the container at the moment and 1,5°C is the installed temperature.In one 20 ft container we install two recorders and in a 40 ft container we install three. This is to check the temperature inside the container during the trip to its destination anywhere in the world.When all container settings are checked and when they are correct we load the container in the loading dock.

The container is back in the harbour.Ready to unload the truck, so the container can go on board. By cranes they lift the full containers and bring it to their place.

Time for transport. If everything is allright and checked the containers are transported by boat and air transport.

Quality Control

VWS, Quality control of our flowerbulbs

Right from the moment the flower bulbs are planted by the growers in Holland, we carefully monitor both the development and the quality of the bulbs. Upon arrival at our warehouse the bulbs are subjected to thorough testing. What’s more, in our greenhouses the development of the planted lots is registered in a professional way. After shipment of the bulbs, our responsibility does not end. In numerous visits to our B2B relations, we keep a sharp eye on quality.

Field Control

During cultivation the purchaser performs several inspections. He also checks the bulbs regularly during bloom and uprooting.

Entry Control and Stage control

All bulbs are checked at entry by our quality-control officer and purchaser. At entry and during preparation the stage of the bulb is monitored carefully.

Greenhouse control

On our grounds, you can find our greenhouse, where samples of every batch are planted. Several plantings are done. The sales manager, purchaser and quality-control officer conscientiously check all batches for growth and possible defects or diseases. We also test all new types for summer or winter blossoming. Finally the number of buds and their lengths are recorded. Because we want the best results for everyone, our suppliers and customers are regularly invited to visit our greenhouse.

Monitoring during storage and preparation

All storage rooms are connected to a computer system. In each storage room, we create a microclimate, and we personally and continually monitor such elements as temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide.

Exit control

Before the bulbs are shipped, they are checked once again for all possible aspects of quality, size of the lilium, tulip, iris, gladiol and more bulbs and corms, and quantity.

Control transport by container

To lower the transport costs (F.O.B. costs) weekly we transport 3 x 20ft container or 1 x 40ft container with one 20 ft at the same time from Broek op Langedijk to Rotterdam or Antwerp (Belgium) for export. An additional benefit is that there is less pollution of the environment.

Before loading the container we check if the container is not older than 5 years, has been set at the right temperature, if the drains are open, if the ventilation holes are set correctly and finally if the container is clean. All this is to be sure that the bulbs are being transported under the optimal circumstances.

After- sales service

We visit our customers regularly so that we can see for ourselves that the quality of the bulbs meets our standards. We also advise growers as much as possible about planting, assortment and marketing.
